A noisy boiler can be caused by a range of different things, so you should try and diagnose the problem as best as you can. While a gas engineer will be happy to do this for you, it can give you peace of mind to find the cause of the problem for yourself. The following list indicates the sound your boiler is making, followed by why.
Whistling (resembles a boiling kettle)
This sound is known as kettling, as it makes your boiler sound like a whistling kettle. It is caused by a build-up of limescale or sludge internally on the heat exchanger, which stops the water from flowing freely. It can be easily resolved with a powerflush.
These sounds can also be caused by build-up internally, so we recommend a powerflush for your system. It could also be caused by a loose component, so this would need to be fixed by an engineer.
This is caused by trapped air inside your system. If this is the case, you have probably also noticed your radiators are not heating up correctly. These problems can be fixed by bleeding your radiators.
A quiet humming is natural with every boiler, however, if it is becoming more than just background noise, it could link to a fault with the heating element in your system. This will require a gas engineer.
This can be caused by several small issues, such as loose brackets or components. You can fix this yourself with a screwdriver. It could also be caused by your boiler shaking, which requires a gas engineer to secure it again. It could also be an issue with the circulating pump.
This is caused by a leak within your system, usually due to the pressure being too high or general wear and tear. You should call out a gas engineer to check it out, to stop the noise and present any further water damage. If the problem persists, it may be time to replace your boiler.
